Vaanavil Farm Stay and the Thought Behind Its Rooms!

We are not a resort! We are a farm foremost and the farm stay is our endeavour to share our way of life with you. The only other tag that I would attach is home stay. The room is only one of many aspects of the stay, but it is an important one. While we have certain regrets about the way we constructed, overall we are very happy the way the farm stay has turned out without the assistance of an architect or engineer.

We take joint credit of the sustainable construction. Here, I want to take the opportunity to compliment @noushadya with single-handedly turning the farm stay into a beautiful home. She has a keen eye for decor and elegance.

We have divided up responsibilities at the farm so that we are able to complement each other’s skills. She runs the farm and I run the organic shop. I welcome & host guests and she serves them lip smacking farm fresh F&B. She takes care of operations & HR, while I take care of marketing & finance.

Thought behind the names

Both our farm stay rooms are named after philosophies that we embrace in our daily lives of the farm.

Palluyir : Palluyir in Tamil means biodiversity. We host a diverse set of plant and animal species in our farm : domesticated and wild. Biodiversity helps in keeping pest and disease management efforts to the minimum. The other pillars of our farming philosophy are : minimum tillage and no burning. They support the flourishing of diversity of life.

Kalpataru : Also known as Kalpavruksham, Kalpataru means tree of plenty. Even before we bought this land, it had several Coconut, Palmyra and Neem trees: all species provide abundance of uses to us. Other trees which we have introduced such as Banana and Bamboo also provide an abundance of produce for human use. The abundance of leaf litter that all these species provide have been critical to the soil organic carbon boost that we have seen at the farm over the 8 years.

How to Reserve Vaanavil Farm Stay?

We have been busy with hosting guests almost every weekend in the last 11 months since we started the Farm Stay. From ex-colleagues to friends to family member to those who have been following our journey on social media, we are grateful to everyone who have helped us kickstart our hosting journey.

On account of the proximity to Papanasam temple, we have been having quite a few walk-in guests, thanks to Google Maps. Kuttrallam waterfalls is only an hour’s drive away. Agasthiyar falls, Manimuthar falls, Tiger Reserve jeep safari are other tourist attractions that are bringing tourists in our direction.
