A Bowl of Comfort: Navara Rice Kanji

On days when we want a light meal, we make rice kanji. We had this delicious light Unpolished Navara rice Kanji for lunch few days ago. Paired with Sundakkai (Turkey Berry) kootu and Kollu (Horsegram) thogayal.

Here’s how to make Navara Kanji:

  • Rinse and soak one cup of Navara rice overnight
    • If you are short on time, break the Navara rice in a mixer with a few pulses so that most of the grains are half broken. This will need soaking of 3-4 hours only.
  • Drain the water, add 4 cups of fresh water, a pinch of salt and pressure cook for 7-8 whistles
  • After the pressure subsides, mash the kanji and add a cup of coconut milk. You can also add buttermilk or curd after the kanji cools down, if you like it tangy.
  • Enjoy with some pickle and sides of your choice!

Navara or Njavara is a variety from Kerala. It has been cultivated in Tamil Nadu for several decades now, given how agriculture in certain neighbouring districts have been influenced by Kerala diets. More about this rice in an Instagram post below my signature.
