We have a lot of mango ginger in the garden so I'm going to post everything that I make with that rhizome. I already made thokku with it so that may not make it to the feed. Today I made maa inji sadham like regular lemon rice and added some lemon juice to it. Tasted like mango rice and lemon rice had a baby 😂 Nevertheless we enjoyed it with pavakkai poriyal, sundakkai vathal and vazhaithandu morkootu. This simple lunch on Sunday happened because we had amazing Ragda Patties for breakfast! Our first mango ginger harvest! It is such a pity that, for the first 35 years of my life, i had never tasted this amazing spice. The first time I had it, it was fresh after a harvest from the zero-till raised beds. Paddy threshing, the old style, at our farm. We have been trying to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture slowly by taking up these tasks by hand instead of machine. The operation of the fossil fuel guzzling combiner harvester does far too damage to the soil, air and non-renewable resources. When harvested by hand, more labourers are needed ; so, the income is much better distributed amongst people. This contributes to reducing income and therefore wealth inequality. Also, our paddy plots are too small for it to make sense to hire a combiner harvester. Among the innumerous offerings of the Palmyra tree or Panamaram, is Palmyra Sprouts, a seasonal delicacy popular during January. Some of you in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh must have bought it locally during pongal or ordered from us. When curd comes back unsold, the first thing that comes to my mind is "should I make morkuzhambu for lunch today?" Everyone in our family loves it except for one tiny who only like chilled fresh curd. Also, living amidst coconut trees means abundance of coconuts - so we never think twice before using our favorite drupe. Vijayalakshmi of Sriram thottam, Pottal, Tirunelveli shares how difficult it is to run an organic farm. She grows coconuts, a variety of bananas, rice, turmeric and groundnuts. Her parboiled Seeraga Samba rice is one of the best sellers in our store. In this video she talks about how wildlife has damaged her coconut trees and bananas. Hand harvesting by sickle is a back breaking task for women. But when the combiner harvester is not available nearby on time, farmers have no option to employ people to harvest paddy by hand. Om Prakash and Priyanka of Sree Prabhanjan Goshala have been raising native cows for the last 5 years at Chettipanankaadu, Vikramasingapuram. Om Prakash himself takes the cows out for grazing almost every day. Minimal external feed is provided because the cattle get enough nutrition from fresh grass and ground cover. This way, the environmental footprint of raising cows is kept to the minimum. He uses the cow dung and cow urine for fertilizing his fields and to run a biogas plant. To generate additional income, he makes many products from the sun dried cow dung and sterilized cow urine. Building strong local communities is one of the most urgent and important steps to combat modern societal problems. Over the last 5 years, we have been fortunate enough to find like minded people nearby who are turning to land as a means of sustenance. While there are differences in our past backgrounds and experiences, we are similar in our outlook towards the future.
